Hand and Machine Appliqué The Karen Kay Buckley Way (DVD)
I have not been this excited in a very long time. My new DVD is better than I could have ever wished.
In this DVD I discuss all the supplies you’ll need, making templates, the appliqué stitch, inner and outer points, smooth curves, Perfect Circles, several methods to make stems, reverse appliqué and squaring the blocks. It really covers everything you'll need to know to have beautiful hand and machine appliqué. If you like appliqué you'll want this DVD. The close-up shots of the stitching are simply amazing. I do not hold back on anything. I tell you everything I know to help make your appliqué the best it can be.

McCALL'S QUILTING MAGAZINE-APRIL 2009 http://www.mccallsquilting.com
Author, teacher and award-winning quilter Karen Kay Buckley presents a 10 chapter, 2 hour course on everything to do with applique. Close-up video photography and Karen's chatty, informative style make this DVD a must-have resource on applique, placement, templates, hand and machine techniques, edge turning, reverse applique, stems and finishing.

THE APPLIQUE SOCIETY www.theappliquesociety.org
Karen Kay Buckley has been quilting for 25 year and has completed 250 quilts. She brings all this experience to her designing as she creates intricate and stunning appliqué quilts. If you ever have a chance to take a class from Karen jump at it. No matter how experienced an appliquér you are you will learn so much. For those of us who may not be able to learn from Karen in person I have some good news. Karen has just released a DVD called “Hand and Machine Appliqué The Karen Kay Buckley Way”. On the DVD Karen shares her thoughts on the following:
- Supplies: These are tools Karen prefers to work with and include such items as markers, scissors, bias bars and bias makers and even the iron that works best for her techniques with directions on how to make your own pressing surface. Instructions on how to use many of these supplies are found throughout the DVD as she address other issues that impact your work.
- Placement of Appliqué using a light box or transfer paper and working with background fabrics.
- Making templates using Templar® and freezer paper and determining which product will work best for your particular design.
- The appliqué stitch using both hand and machine stitching. Topics for hand appliqué discuss inner and outer points, turning under the edge using needleturn or Templar® and Magic® sizing, working with perfect circles and preventing shadowing.
The machine appliqué segment contains a discussion on what foot to use, needles, thread and position of thread in relation to the machine, bobbin thread, stitches, inner and outer points and working with tricky shapes.
Karen also demonstrates her method for reverse appliqué and creating stems by cutting the fabric on the grain or the bias. Stems are created using either the needleturn method, Clover bias makers and heat resistant plastic strips. Finishing your quilt block is important and Karen passes along some good tips on squaring a block that contains dimensional elements.
All information on this DVD is presented in a clear easy to understand manner with excellent film work. It was a pleasure to get a peek at some of Karen’s many quilts used in the background as she moves from segment to segment. Total run time 2 hours.

Karen,
I recently ordered and received your DVD, and just have to tell you it is absolutely fantastic. I felt like I was in a private class with you. It is thorough and exceptionally well produced, and I just placed an order for several of the items you mentioned.
I was privileged to attend your presentation at the Olathe Quilters Guild a year or so ago. I've been a fan since the first time I saw you on Simply Quilts and then bought the mylar washers from you and made my first circles -- I have been a KKB groupie ever since -- I LOVE TO MAKE CIRCLES now! (Well, I LOVE to applique.)
Thanks,
— Edie Gottschall

AROUND THE GARDEN
23.5" x 58"
One of my favorite pastimes is walking through flowering gardens. They are a delight to sight, smell and sound. The bursts of color, the aroma of rich soil, flowering plants, and the soft flutter of pollinating insects were the inspiration for this project. As you appliqué each piece, think of spring and the beauty of nature. This 23.5" x 58" project is a fantastic addition to any room or an exceptional gift for that special someone. EARTHLY DELIGHTS
I am really excited about my new book: Earthly Delights: The Perfect Finish. This book has been twenty years in the making. The book displays more than forty of my quilts and explains how I design my borders. From the simple to the complex, the book helps you decide how to complete any project. The book is based on my lecture series “To Border or Not to Border, That is the Question.” Walk down the path as I share my personal growth as a quilter with the hope that the journey will inspire you for years to come.

NOTE: As I was in the process of remaking “Midnight Floral Fantasy” I found that a step had been missed in the pattern booklet. It is something simple and most of you would have figured this out on your own when you got there, but I am sending this correction in hopes of saving you some frustration.
Please print this page and add it to the top of page 10 in your booklet: [.doc] [.pdf]

GARDEN MEDLEY PATTERN
I just love seeing the beautiful colors of blooming flowers in
the spring and summer. At least in my area that is the only time
we see them in bloom. But now you can see them year round with
this easy to make 21x24-1/2" wall quilt. Sew each panel as
a separate wall piece or combine all three panels to make a nice
little wall quilt. The directions in this pattern will show you
how to make smooth curves, sharp points and perfect circles. Whether
you decide to hand or machine appliqué this project you
will love the results. Recommended notions:
Templar, Perfect Circles, John James Sharps Needles - Size 10, Saral
Paper, Perfect Stems.

FOLK ART FANTASY PATTERN
Folk Art is an American tradition and this wall quilt reminds
me of designs from times gone by. The simple, elegant and flowing
shapes create a wonderful quilt to hang in your home or give to
a loved one. The smoothness of the curves allows you to easily
hand or machine appliqué this 38x22-1/2" wall quilt.
There are a few small areas which include reverse appliqué
just for a little more fun. Keep the Folk Art tradition alive
as you stitch this wonderful little project. Recommended

VEGETABLE GARDEN PATTERN
As a child I have memories of picking vegetables and weeds from
the family garden. Well, now we can have a weed-free garden, which
makes this project lots of fun. I remember looking over the front
of those seed packets trying to determine just how each vegetable
would grow. When I designed this six block 30x41" wall quilt
I had those seed packets in mind. This project could easily be altered
to a four-block wall quilt or just three blocks in a row. It might
depend on the wall space you have to fill or the space in your friend's
new kitchen. This would make a wonderful housewarming gift. These
fast growing vegetables are easy to hand or machine appliqué.

Marking Tools
Bohin White Mechanical Chalk Pencil
As I was traveling and teaching this past year several students showed me this marker and I find that I like it just as much as they did. It makes a smooth line on medium to darker fabrics. It can be washed out or erased from the fabric with any fabric eraser.
|

|
Bohin Pencil refills
Refill lead for your Bohin mechanical pencil: yellow, green or white.
|

|
Chalk Cartridge Set
I love these for marking my fabrics. Included in this pack is one cartridge, one sharpener, and 8 white pieces of chalk along with 8 assorted colors of chalk. No matter what fabric you are marking there is a color of chalk that will show and the chalk is easy to change in the cartridge. And it has washed out or brushed off of every fabric. I do however recommend you test it prior to use.
|

|
Chalk refills
Refill chalks for the Chalk Cartridge. There are 8 white and 8 assorted chalks in the package.
|

|
Clover White Pen
This is an excellent marker to use on dark fabrics. The first time I used this marker I thought it was not working. But, within a couple of seconds the line I drew, which was invisible, dried to a wonderfully fine, easy to see white line. To remove the mark simply iron it away or wash it from the fabric.

Pins and Needles
Microtex Sharp Needles-For machine sewing there is nothing I like more than Microtex Sharp needles. They have a thin, sharp point and give me a perfect stitch. I use the 60/8 for my machine applique along with the invisible thread from Sew-Art International. I use either 60/8 or 80/12 for machine quilting. It just depends on the thickness of the thread. For thinner threads you'll want 60/8. For medium threads you will want the 80/12. I also use the 80/12 for piecing. Love these needles.
Size 60/8, $4.39
Size 80/12, $4.39

John James Gold’n Glide Needles These needles are wonderful for hand appliqué. They do just what the title says; they glide right through your fabric. I am always looking for things that make my hand appliqué easier and these do just that.

Clover Desktop Needlethreader
This needlethreader from Clover has to be the best needlethreader I have ever used. You simply place the needle eye down in the marked location, push on the lever, release and remove your threaded needle. It is simply amazing. I love this little threader.
Price: $14.95

 |

|
| Clover Applique Pins-These wonderful little pins come in a handy closable case. In addition to the small size the heads have a tear-drop instead of the traditional round head. You might be thinking....so what. Well, actually that tear-drop really helps. Often times during the hand applique process my thread gets wrapped around the pin and I have to remove it. Where the thread gets lodged is where the head connects to the shaft. With the tear-drop there is no place for the thread to get caught and it just rolls right off the pin. Now that is handy and a real time saver.
|
 |

|
| Clover Glasshead Pins-These extra-fine and very sharp pins pass smoothly through the fabric. These pins are useful for pinning applique and piecing. The head is made of and iron-proof glass. They come in a handy closable case.

Threads
YLI Threads-These threads are a 60/2. I love them for hand applique and for machine quilting. There are 24 colors in this package. Each spool has 250 yards of thread. I know you will be able to put these to good use in either your hand applique or your machine quilting. The value of this set is like getting four spools free.
Cost $50.00
|
 |

|
Sew-Art International Threads- I use this thread for my mock hand applique on the machine (machine applique) . It sews beautifully. When you are finished sewing it looks just like it was done by hand because the thread is invisible. It comes in two colors, clear and smoked. It is .004mm and has 3000 yards per spool.
Cost $3.50 per spool Shipping in the US $1.00 and International $2.00

Mettler 60/2
100% cotton thread with a silk finish.
For hand applique this thread is fantastic. It offers a multitude of color choices. Because it is so thin it gets lost on the edge of my hand applique so all you notice are the smooth curves and sharp points and not the stitching.
This thread is also great for machine quilting. It creates a smooth and subtle look around my applique and works well with overlapping designs such as feathers.
I also use this thread for machine piecing. It takes up less space in the seams allowing me greater accuracy and flatter seams.

THREAD BAG
I love my thread bag. I use it to hold all of my hand applique threads. No matter where I sit to sew as long as I have my bag I have all the threads I need. It really helps to keep me organized. There are four zipper sections to hold your thread. You will place each spool in the zipper pocket and needle each thread through the strip of Ultrasuede. The photo shows Mettler threads but the pockets will also hold DMC, Coats and Clark and YLI Silk.

Piping Hot Binding tool
This tool created by Susan K. Cleveland is wonderful if you are adding piping to your seams. Using this acrylic tool helps trim piping seam allowances to ¼” or ½” with great accuracy and makes working with piping easier. Over the years I have worked with a ruler to do this trimming and I must admit this new tool Susan created makes the job easier and much more accurate. Package includes detailed directions along with the acrylic trimming tool and 5 yards of 1mm cording.
|
 |
| Groovin' Piping Trimming Tool Grande - Susan has added this new tool to her collection. This size allows for thicker cording, which I love. You can use a cording up to 3/16" in diameter. With the detailed directions you will have beautiful and accurately and evenly cut seams of either 1/4" or 1/2". If you liked the first of these tools you'll love the grande. In addition to using this for cording on your quilts just think of all the other uses...pillows, handbags, draperies..............

Pattern Ease
For those of you who have taken classes with me you know I often use this product as a placement guide. I place the Pattern Ease over my paper pattern and trace the design onto the Pattern Ease. Next, I center the Pattern Ease over my background fabric and baste it along one edge. When I am ready to position my applique pieces I an slide them under the Pattern Ease, pin them in place and proceed to applique. I use this for placement guide for both hand and machine applique.
